Holix, the Arcane Shield Empty Holix, the Arcane Shield

Post by Zarkof Wed Feb 20, 2013 10:20 am

    Introduction:
Holix is a tanky support that takes the damage he and his allies and turns it back on his enemies, causing his spells to deal extra damage. He can set up a barrier that will block skillshots and slow enemies.

    Appearance:
Holix is in his mid 30s, has a shaved head, and wears battle armor fashioned in a Piltover sense. In his right hand he wields a large, arcane-charged kite shield with a large blue sphere on the front that is brimming with arcane power. The luminosity on this indentation increases as he stores more power in it, and arcane lightning crackles around the shield while it is above 50% capacity.

He auto attacks by holding his shield with both hands and swinging it at foes or bashing them, causing an arcane discharge that increases in size with his Stored Power.

    Story:
While Holix is a resident of piltover, he is not particularly gifted in the ways of science and invention like most of the others; however, he was born with innate fighting talent and determination. In his youth, Holix was never satisfied or content with life in Piltover. While he wasn't the brightest student, he tried to stay positive and motivated to do well in his schooling. He always finished in the bottom tier of his class, and was often on the receiving end of ridicule for his "substandard" intellect. By the time he was 17, he dropped out of school and decided to join the Demacian Military.

Military life was rough, but it wasn't anything Holix couldn't handle; in fact, he enjoyed it. During his military training, it became clear to Holix's superiors that while he wasn't bright, he sure could fight. He did so well in his training that some of the senior officers attempted to humiliate him by challenging him to a sparring match. Holix didn't feel that the challenge was fair, but he was determined that he could still win. He accepted the challenge, knowing that a loss would be more than just a bad mark on his reputation. To make it interesting, the seniors limited Holix to using only a shield, while they could each choose their weapons. He faced 3 of the seniors one after the other. Holix won without a scratch, avoiding every attack and using his shield to deflect his opponent's offense so that he could get in close and strike decisive blows. After the victory, Holix's superior officer granted him an honorary title. Holix continued to excel at his military career, fighting with only a shield, until he retired and returned home to Piltover by his 28th birthday.

After hearing about Viktor's assault on Jayce's lab and Jayce's subsequent heroics, Holix saw the opportunity to rewrite his reputation among the cityfolk. Since he didn't have an extraordinary military career, not many of Piltover's citizens knew about it and to them Holix was still "that dull kid". Holix approached Jayce with the intent of joining him in the defense of the city, and Jayce nearly laughed. After demonstrating his fighting skill in a quick sparring match, Holix convinced Jayce to let him help. Jayce agreed and started designing a weapon for Holix. Since Holix had remarkable skill with a shield, Jayce fashioned some of his arcane crystal technology into a shield. The shield allowed Holix to manipulate the arcane energies stored within, and could even recharge itself by absorbing the energy from the surroundings. While he had trouble understanding the science behind his new weapon, he quickly understood how to use it effectively. Holix then joined Jayce in the defense of Piltover to the surprise of everyone in the city, surpassing their low expectations.

    Skills:

Passive: Power Absorption - Every time Holix or one of his allied champions in a 900 range takes damage, he stores a % of the (unmitigated) damage taken in his shield (Max 90+30*level) (20% damage done to allies, 40% damage done to Holix). Power dissipates at a rate of 5% per second if Holix has not gained Stored Power for 5 seconds. Each of his spells will use up to a % of the maximum stored power to cause additional damage or effect.

Additionally, Holix's auto attacks are empowered, dealing 8% of his total Stored Power as bonus magic damage. (does not consume power)

notes: Graphically, this resource bar will be situated above his health bar and be colored white.

This does not block damage. The way this works is that each time he casts a spell he will consume a % of the max shield strength based on the "Stored Power" Ratio on his spell.

I have not done the math on the resource generation and that is what will probably be the major balancing thing to work on.

    Q: Discharge/Shocker

    Cooldown: 8 seconds
    Mana Cost: 30/35/40/45/50 mana
Power Cost: up to 25% Stored Power

Discharge: Holix discharges energy from his shield, dealing 40/70/100/130/160 (+45% AP) (+up to 25% Stored Power) magic damage to all enemies in a 400 radius, slowing them by 30/35/40/45/50% for 2 seconds and charging enemy champions with Arcane Residue for 4 seconds. If Holix auto attacks a charged enemy, he regains 20% of the Stored Power used with this spell and consumes the debuff. While there are still enemies charged with Arcane Residue, Holix gains access to Shocker

Shocker: If Holix has 15% Stored Power, he can consume it to stun all enemies charged with Arcane Residue for 1.5 seconds. 900 range.

    W: Empowerment

Passive: Holix gains 1 Armor and Magic resist for every 10 points of Stored Power. Caps at 8/16/24/32/40.

    Range: 700
    Cooldown: 12 seconds
    Mana Cost: 75

Holix empowers all units around him, granting allies 8/11/14/17/20% movement speed and granting Holix double the effect for 3 seconds.

For up to 8 seconds after activation, Holix will consume 10% Stored Power per second to heal himself and his allies in range for 8/11/14/17/20 (+2% AP) (+2% Stored Power) every second. Reactivating this ability or depleting all Stored Power will cancel this effect.

notes: I changed this around to make it more of a mini-Shurelya's with a prolonged heal effect. This is slightly more powerful than GP's Raise Morale but remember the duration is much shorter.

    E: Arcane Barrier

    Range: 500
    Diameter: 400/500/600/700/800
    Cooldown: 18/16/14/12/10 seconds
    Mana Cost: 100 mana
Power Cost: 8% stored power every pulse (including the cast) and up to 16% stored power on detonation.

Holix projects arcane energy out of his shield, forming a field at target location for up to 3 seconds. This field will pulse up to 3 times: once upon casting and once every second after that. Each pulse deals 10/20/30/40/50 (+10% AP) (+8% Stored Power) to any enemy in the field and shields allies for 15/25/35/45/55 (+10% AP) for 3 seconds. The shield strength will stack and refresh the total duration with every pulse.

At the end of the field's duration or if Holix reactivates this ability, the barrier detonates, dealing 30/50/70/90/110 (+20% AP) (+16% Stored Power) magic damage to all enemy units in the field and slows them by 30% for 2 seconds. Allies in the field during the detonation are also shielded for an additional 35/55/75/95/115 (+20% AP) for 3 seconds.

notes: changed this around to provide a shield instead of spell block. The field will be a blue-ish bubble like Viktor's Gravity Field.

    R: Meteor Strike

    Range: 1200
    AoE Diameter: 800
    Cooldown: 130/110/90
    Mana Cost: 100/125/150 mana
Power Cost: up to 50% Stored Power

Holix utilizes a burst of arcane energy to propel himself into the air, becoming untargetable then landing at target area after up to 1.5 seconds depending on the cast distance (0.5 sec minimum for short range). The impact deals 150/225/300 (+40% AP) (+50% Stored Power) magic damage to all enemies, knocking them back 200 units and slowing them by 20% (+1% per 2 Stored Power used on this spell) for 3 seconds. For 6/8/10 seconds after landing, Holix generates 10% of his maximum Stored Power per second, preventing the passive % decay for the duration.

notes: The 1.5 second delay is to balance the 1200 Range. Remember this spell will deal a lot more damage if you charge up some stored power before-hand, and targeting the ground closer to you will reduce the delay time down to a minimum of half a second.

    Edit Log:
    1. Made Post
    2. Tweaked passive auto attack buff and W
    3. Tweaked formatting
    4. Added lore
    5. Tweaked Q
    6. minor wording edit on passive, removed AD ratio on Q and increased the ap ratio, changed W to not cost power for movespeed and lowered the cost overall for the heal, edited E's skill-blocking capabilities.
    2/20 5am - copied to champcrafter.
2/20 5pm - Reworked W into something more like an AoE Bear Stance with a persistent heal/sec; reworked E into an AoE field that applies a stacking shield to allies instead of blocking spells, changed Stored Power degeneration

Okay Ummm E is like an ult you may want to nerf the numbers, alot. I like the effect. I wish i knew how the Q's second part works all the way. As for the second resource it works well enough.

Q is a 2 part spell, like Lee Sin's Sonic Wave/Resonating Strike. If you hit someone with Discharge they get marked, and as long as they're marked you can spend the additional 15% stored power to activate Shocker for the followup stun. I'll probably add a range on it, though.

What's too high for E? The Stored Power ratio? The max damage it can do is 60/110/160/210/260 (+50% AP)(+40% Stored Power) and that's only if someone is standing in the effect the entire time and gets hit when it blows up. If you cast it and immediately detonate it, it only does 25/45/65/85/105 (+20% AP)(+16% SP). Is the slow too powerful?

    Yep, I'm still hatin' Jayce...Blargh, sorry. =w=

    Skills:
Passive: Power Absorption - Every time Holix or one of his allied champions in a 900 range takes damage, he stores a % of the (unmitigated) damage taken in his shield (Max 90+30*level) (20% damage done to allies, 40% damage done to Holix). Additionally, Holix's auto attacks are empowered, dealing 8% of his total Stored Power as bonus magic damage. (does not consume power)
Yep, there's the tank aspect alright. Encouraging going into the midst of combat as a tank should. Still say it's like fury in that skills can just use up your resource. I'd say that it shouldn't dissipate so quickly because it feels like a leak, or are you afraid of being too much like fury?

    Q: Discharge/Shocker

    Cooldown: 8 seconds
    Mana Cost: 30/35/40/45/50 mana
Power Cost: up to 25% Stored Power

Discharge: Holix discharges energy from his shield, dealing 40/70/100/130/160 (+45% AP) (+up to 25% Stored Power) magic damage to all enemies in a 400 radius, slowing them by 30/35/40/45/50% for 2 seconds and charging enemy champions with Arcane Residue for 4 seconds. Shocker: If Holix has 15% Stored Power, he can consume it to stun all enemies charged with Arcane Residue for 1.5 seconds. 900 range.
Ok, so Discharge can be a free spell. Seems difficult enough to be a rare instance, especially since I don't think Tiamat/Hydra count as autoattacks themselves. It's a good AoE slow as well. Aaaand, bam, Shocker. A range though, so if they're fast enough they can escape an AoE finisher. Alright, that works.

    W: Empowerment

Passive: Holix gains 1 Armor and Magic resist for every 10 points of Stored Power. Caps at 8/16/24/32/40.

    Range: 900
    Cooldown: 4 seconds
Mana Cost: 10 mana per second

    Toggle:

Holix empowers all units around him, granting allies 8/12/16/20/24% movement speed and granting Holix double the effect.

Additionally, if Holix has Stored Power, he will consume 10% Stored Power per second to heal himself and his allies for 8/11/14/17/20 (+2% AP) (+2% Stored Power) every second.
Eh, personally I think that armor/mr bonus cap can be higher. Does the toggling actually take a % of the stored power? Because you said in the passive it does, but I see no number here specifying how much. I also want to say the speed bonus should be lower, considering Gangplank's Raise Morale does something similar but does not last as long nor is it as fast.

    E: Arcane Barrier

    Range: 600
    Width: 300/375/450/525/600
    Cooldown: 18/16/14/12/10 seconds
    Mana Cost: 70 mana
Power Cost: up to 8% stored power to cast and up to an additional 8% stored power every pulse/on reactivation and up to 16% stored power on the final pulse/on spell block

Holix projects arcane energy out of his shield, forming a barrier wall at target location for up to 3 seconds. This spell will pulse up to 4 times: once upon casting and once every second after that. The first 3 pulses deal 10/20/30/40/50 (+10% AP) (+8% Stored Power) to any enemy within 50 range of the wall. The 4th pulse detonates the wall, dealing 30/50/70/90/110 (+20% AP) (+16% Stored Power) magic damage to all units within a 200 range of the wall and slowing them by 30% for 2 seconds.

Holix can recast this spell after 1 second to manually detonate the barrier, dealing 15/25/35/45/55 (+10% AP) (+8% Stored Power) magic damage and slowing all units in a 200 range of the wall by 30% for 2 seconds.

Additionally, if any skillshots that stop on hitting a champion collide with the barrier, the barrier stops the spell and deals 30/50/70/90/110 (+20% AP) (+16% Stored Power) magic damage to the caster and slows them by 30% for 2 seconds. Skillshots that would normally pass through objects have their damage reduced by 50%. AoEs that hit the barrier have their damage reduced by 50%. The barrier also attracts spells that prioritize champions and reduces the damage of bouncing spells that hit it by 50%. The barrier interacts with 1 spell before dissipating.
A stationary Death's Caress that can slow. Eh...different enough I'd say. I'm not sure about skillshots being stopped period if they be or skillshots being reduced by 50% though. I'd say ones that can be stopped still go through, but reduce the damage by 75%, and ones that don't stop be reduced only by 25%. My logic is that impassable terrain doesn't block skillshots, and the only reason I'd see that they could is if were an ultimate because hey, power!

Good initiation. It kind of reminds me of a fusion between Grand Skyfall and Dominus with a couple of its parts, and that's no problem. The knockback and slow are fine, again lending to its initiation power. It's not too strong to make a teamfight one-sided either and that is what I appreciate the most! Very Happy

Holix doesn't seem to have had too much change as far as I can remember. I still like 'im though, mainly because it's almost like a fury-using tank...

oh wait I forgot you reviewed him already, too >.> derp sorry, but I did use your feedback making some changes. You could check the LoL forum post to see.

edit: None of his spells require Stored Power except for the additional effect on Shocker and the Heal effect on Empowerment. Its only use is to make him deal more damage (or slow more with his ult). I was also debating taking out mana costs, making him a cooldown based tank/support. I would have to change W around to not be a toggled spell but rather an activated spell with a prolonged effect (activate it for a burst of speed and keep it on for the heal)

on his E, it's really my rendition of a terrain-spell-shield. The other thing I could do with it would be to have it place a stacking shield on allies with every pulse and make it more of a field rather than a wall instead of blocking spells.

    edit2: made the changes.
